A symposium for Change through Music - Feb. 4th 2023

About tHE SYMPOSIUM…

Catalyst: A Symposium for Change through Music was an outlet for academics, students, professors, advocates, and creatives to gather and collaborate through a day of workshops, panels, roundtables, and discussions. The symposium included keynote sessions by Adrian Berry, Hayley Janes and Mark Campbell; as well as a workshop led by Christine Duncan for all to participate in.

At our first ever Catalyst symposium, student leaders and community members with shared visions and goals networked, learned, brainstormed, and workshopped to foster equity, diversity and inclusion in music initiatives and our other respective work.

During our roundtable sessions, attendees discussed their past, current, and future work pertaining to the symposium's theme and brainstormed how we can create change together.

We thank all of our attendees, keynote speakers, workshop leaders, volunteers, tech support, building manager, student service team, planning mentors and allies for making this possible. The event was funded by an FMUA SPF Grant.

VOICES Through the Arts

Students for Survivors - a collaborative effort introduced by the Faculty of Music Undergraduate Association (FMUA), University of Toronto Students’ Union (UTSU) and The PEARS Project - was organized to demand that the University of Toronto be more proactive in protecting, preventing, and responding to sexual harassment and assault/gender-based violence on campus.

VOICES Through the Arts is a recorded performance featuring artists from the community that speaks to the themes of hope, change, unity, solidarity, and uplifting those who have been silenced. At this event, messages of allyship and empowerment were shared through various art forms including but not limited to dance, visual arts, poetry, and musical performances.

At this event, attendees had the chance to:

  • View the performance’s premiere

  • Show support to survivors, allies, and performers

  • Create posters that will be featured in future displays of solidarity

  • Table with allies and learn more about how you can get involved in the campaign over refreshments and treats
